History on a Piece of Cloth: Kansas Flour Sacks

Thursday, March 5, 2015

Smoky Hill Museum Lobby

Flour sacks were mini-billboards of their time. These practical pieces of cloth often expressed political views and showed advertising trends, marketing schemes, cultural themes and more. Join Nancy Jo Leachman as she discusses these mini-billboards, showcasing her new additions as well as many from the Salina area. Nancy Jo has been collecting flour sacks for 16 years and has over 100 Kansas flour sacks, most of which are from the 1920s to the 1940s. She’s also an ardent Kansas explorer and a reference librarian for the Salina Public Library. You’re invited to bring your own flour sack, or something made from a flour sack, to share with Nancy Jo.

This free presentation will be offered at the Smoky Hill Museum, Thursday, March 5, 2015 from 5:30-6:30pm.
