What We Collect

Smoky Hill Museum Photograph Archives

Smoky Hill Museum Photograph Archives

five historic photographs with one being examined with a magnifying glass. White gloves, tape measure, and archival folder also laying near by.

The Smoky Hill Museum’s archive of historic photographs document Salina, Saline County and the surrounding region’s people, architecture, business, daily life and events. The photograph collection contains approximately 6,800 images spanning from the 1860s to 2010. The collection includes photographic prints, stereoscopic views, glass plate negatives, slides, drawings, postcards, film and family albums.
They document the fascinating history of Salina from its early days as a young frontier town to a unique progressive city. The Museum is dedicated to the long-term storage, preservation and documentation of these photographs. Since 2008, digitization and indexing efforts have been underway.

No use fee will be charged for personal and non-commercial use; however, a charge for scanning may apply. For commercial / for profit use, fees apply.

Please contact Jennifer Toelle, Curator of Collections and Research to inquire about images in the photograph archives and for the fee schedule.

Our Impact This Year

  • Allison K.

A great museum for the whole family! We were traveling from the kc area to Colorado and had to stop due to the interstate being closed. We saw the museum was open and were able to spend about 3 hours there walking around the museum. We have three kids, ages 2, 5, 7 who asked if we could go to it again on the way home. Thanks for allowing us to spend a good chunk of our day there! We will be back!
