About Programs and Tours

Group of a lot of people sitting in the Smoky Hill Museum lobby facing a male speaker giving a presentation.

There is always something to see and do at the Smoky Hill Museum with our great hands-on exhibits, children's area and scavenger hunts. We do, however, also have several signature programs and events.

For the most current and up-to-date information, please see our event calendar.

Programs and Events

  • Each month on the first Thursday, the Museum joins with other cultural venues, art galleries and downtown stores to stay open late. Most months the Museum has special, free presentations on a variety of topics.

  • Friends of the River Foundation and the Smoky Hill Museum are partnering to create guided river walks spotlighting the history of the Smoky Hill River as it runs through the heart of Salina. Salina’s past will come to life with info, stories, laughter, and more. When research is complete, seven different history walks will be offered featuring seven different sections of the river. Friends of the River Foundation is a proud funded partner of the Salina Area United Way.

  • Each year around January 29, celebrate Kansas's birthday at the Museum. All week long third grade classes from across the city and around the area get a taste of pioneer life through activities and demonstrations. Then on the following Saturday, the whole family can enjoy making butter, shelling corn, making crafts, eating delicious birthday cake and more at the Kansas Day Open House.

  • On the fourth Saturday in September, the Museum celebrates the history and heritage of the Smoky Hills region with a downtown parade, historic demonstrators, entertainment, food and special activities for kids of all ages. Admission Free.

Our Impact This Year

  • Allison K.

A great museum for the whole family! We were traveling from the kc area to Colorado and had to stop due to the interstate being closed. We saw the museum was open and were able to spend about 3 hours there walking around the museum. We have three kids, ages 2, 5, 7 who asked if we could go to it again on the way home. Thanks for allowing us to spend a good chunk of our day there! We will be back!
