Join Professor Megan VanGorder from Illinois State University and Author of A Mother's Work: Mary Bickerdyke, Civil War-Era Nurse as she discusses the life of Mary Ann “Mother” Bickerdyke. Mother Bickerdyke was a Civil War era nurse and organizer who fought through the bureaucracy of the Civil War medical complex. After the war, Bickerdyke understood that the effects of the war would require continued care for veterans and their families. Professor VanGorder will explore how Bickerdyke navigated the immediate postbellum years after her employment with wartime institutions ended, including a business venture in Salina.
