The violent guerrilla warfare between proslavery and antislavery forces, known as Bleeding Kansas, foreshadowed the national Civil War to come. The border struggle only grew more heated between 1861 and 1865. Join Will Haynes, as he discusses the story of Kansas during the Civil War and how it helped shape the state’s image for years afterward. Haynes is the deputy director of engagement and learning for Watkins Museum of History in Lawrence. This presentation is underwritten by Humanities Kansas.

Our Impact This Year

  • Allison K.

A great museum for the whole family! We were traveling from the kc area to Colorado and had to stop due to the interstate being closed. We saw the museum was open and were able to spend about 3 hours there walking around the museum. We have three kids, ages 2, 5, 7 who asked if we could go to it again on the way home. Thanks for allowing us to spend a good chunk of our day there! We will be back!
