Smoky Hill Museum Lobby

Traveling by train in the late 1800s and early 1900s was a dusty, uncomfortable affair. But whenever weary travelers saw the Harvey House sign, they knew things were looking up! Imagine stepping off the train and into a quality dining experience with real china, real silverware and good food at reasonable prices – all at a railroad dining spot. Join Dr. Anita Specht as she shares about this iconic and successful chain of restaurants, its connection to Kansas and the women who carried the name “Harvey Girls.” See what a place setting would have been like and take home an original Harvey House recipe. Dr. Specht is an associate professor of history at Kansas Wesleyan University.

This free presentation is offered by the Smoky Hill Museum on Thursday, June 2, from 5:30-6:30pm.
