JULY 2008

July 3 First Thursday -- The Museum will be open until 7:00pm. You’re invited to stop by and browse through the store or take in our engaging exhibits.

The 2008 Jr. Explorers Program, Part Deux
The first three sessions of the Jr. Explorer Program were great fun and full of new experiences. Don’t miss out on the last three sessions held in July, they’re filling up fast.

Smoky Hill Museum partners with Lakewood Discovery Center to offer this fun summer experiential learning series for youth ages 9-12. Each weekly program costs $10.00 and space is limited. July 7 Jr. Explorers: Secret Salina, 9am-Noon
July 10 Jr. Explorers: Secret Salina, 9am-2:30pm
Discover the cool things in Salina’s past. Tour the tunnels within the Smoky Hill Museum, visit Founder’s Park, an historic home, the Masonic Temple and Indian Rock Park. A yummy lunch will be provided on Thursday. Top it off by creating your own seal to take home.

July 14 Jr. Explorers: Kaw-some Nation, 9am-Noon
July 17 Jr. Explorers: Kaw-some Nation, 9am-3pm
Kansas is named after the Kaw, or Kansa people. Learn about their daily lives, pictographs, and play a game to see if you could survive on the harsh prairie. You’ll see first hand where the Kaw lived when we visit the Kaw Mission Historical Site in Council Grove. Create your own pictograph and a Kaw necklace.

July 21 Jr. Explorers: Kansas Rocks!, 9am-Noon
July 24 Jr. Explorers: Kansas Rocks!, 9am-3pm
Dig in! Check out what minerals are, how rocks are made, what kinds we have in our area, and talk to rock hounds both in Salina and McPherson. The journey continues to the Underground Salt Museum in Hutchinson for a safety class, a tour 650 feet below the surface, and exploration of the museum exhibits.

Noon Coolers: Our Town
This summer’s Noon Coolers celebrate our town with various presentations, focusing on the history of Salina. Noon Coolers are offered on most Wednesdays during July, from 12:15 to 1:00pm. These free presentations are held in the Community Room on the second floor of the Museum. Bring your lunch if you’d like, relax, have a glass of water or lemonade, sit back and enjoy. Our mouthwatering lineup includes:

July 9 The First 50 Years, offered by Judy Lilly, Kansas Librarian from the Salina Public Library.

July 16 Fields, Courts, Diamonds and More -- a Look at Salina Sports. Presenters will be Greg Maring, Athletic Director from Central High School; Ken Stonebraker, Athletic Director from South High School; and David Toelle, Sports Information Director from Kansas Wesleyan University.

July 23 And Now This & A History of Broadcasting in Salina -- presented by Ken Jennison, Public Service Director at SMG Radio.

July 30: Hot Salina -- History of the Salina Fire Department -- offered by Captain Bob Budke of the Salina Fire Department.

AUGUST 2008

August 7 First Thursday Museum Gallery Open 5-7pm; Wheat, by Design, 5:30-6:30pm
From the first blush of green to the swaying golden stalks of harvest, wheat in the field is beautiful. But wheat is also beautiful as a cornucopia, angel, windmill or wreath. Learn about the history and different methods of woring with wheat designs from local artist, Donna Morgenstern. Donna has created with wheat for 30 years and sells her pieces throughout the area. She is also featured in the Museum store, and in fact has been featured there since the store’s inception.
