Gateway to Hell

In the 1970s, the cemetery and remains of a church in Stull, Kansas, became infamous as one of the seven Gateways to Hell. Ghost stories swirl about this small community near Lawrence. Some say a witch was killed and buried there. Others claim a witch birthed a child of Satan. Still others say black magic is practiced there.

Rumor says the Roman Catholic Church placed the cemetery on a so-called list of seven Gateways to Hell. At midnight on Halloween, it is said that the Gates of Hell open followed by strange noises, weird lights, blood on gravestones and the appearance of Satan.

As the legends grew, so did the crowds. Halloween night of 1988 brought approximately 500 people. In an attempt to curb vandalism and trespassing, the owners built a fence and the sheriff's department keeps watch over the site. The church was demolished in March of 2002.
